Via Feratta - climbing for all levels

Via Ferrata is an ancient Italian style of climbing where you climb over the mountain using iron wires and can be experienced in many parts of the world. In Schladming there is a huge choice of beautiful mountain tours for all levels. In fact, there are 27 different routes to choose from. 2 routes are specially designed for children, 3 for teenagers and the rest are divided into green (beginners), red (advanced) and black (experts). We recommend that you do one of the routes with an experienced mountain guide who knows the area and the route. If you're looking for a great nature experience and perhaps a bit of an adrenaline rush, we highly recommend via ferrata for the whole family.

2 of our colleagues have tried Via Ferrata with their family

Sussi tried Via Ferrata with her husband and 2 girls aged 8 and 10.

Via Ferrata is a great experience to try. It's a fixed route, secured with steel cables, that really pushes your limits and is a great way to experience Austria.

We chose a family trip with a mountain guide so we had an experienced instructor with us. He was great at giving advice, techniques and words of encouragement throughout the trip. I would always recommend booking a guide if you want to try via ferrata.

The experience has become a great memory for our family. It's really an adventure to try - and it's organised so that everyone can take part.

The safety was first class. We were well trained and even though the guide was English, the children were able to understand the concept easily.

We're still talking about the trip and are keen to try it again.

Johanne tried Via Ferrata with her husband, 2 teenage boys and her 9-year-old daughter.

It was definitely one of the highlights of our week in Schladming. It was great that we had 2 adults, 2 teenage boys and a 9 year old girl doing an activity together that challenged everyone. And where everyone thought they had tried something they hadn't tried before.

On the easy courses you don't need to be physically strong to join in - and the younger generation actually think mum is pretty cool afterwards.

It's great to see the car in the car park get smaller and smaller and you don't really notice that you're suddenly well up the mountain, as you're just concentrating on where to put your next foot. Then there's a little break and you suddenly realise you're standing in the most amazing nature. It's really cool.

After 200 vertical metres, we were all exhilarated as we walked down the mountain together.

As it was our first time and our youngest is only 9 years old, we chose a kids/youth version.

To make sure it was a good first time, we hired a mountain guide for 3 hours. Walter, who is 65 years old, guided us through the "kalo" route, which is located at Rohrmoss.

We all started with A/B routes, which are the easy ones, and on the tour the boys also tried C/D routes, which are a bit more demanding. And with the mountain guide it is possible to try the "Flying Fox", which is a cable car.

I always felt safe and well looked after and will definitely do it again next time we are in Austria,
