5 tips for off-piste skiing
As an avid freeride skier, I know there's nothing like getting off the groomed slopes and venturing into the unknown.
But it takes a little more than courage and a good pair of skis to get to those untouched off-piste gems. Here are my top 5 tips for those wanting to get into off-piste skiing.
1 Equipment is everything
Having the right equipment is very important. As well as your normal skis, you'll need randonnee bindings, which allow you to walk uphill with your skis. You'll also need a pair of stighudar - these are magic mats that help you go uphill without sliding backwards, while also allowing you to move forward smoothly on the descent. And remember, a good rucksack is your best friend. It should hold everything you need, but also be comfortable for the whole trip. It's where you put your skins when you're skiing and all your avalanche equipment. Never go off-piste without at least an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.
2 Safety first
When it comes to off-piste, safety always comes first. Get and learn how to use an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel. Better yet, take an avalanche safety course. Nature is unpredictable and knowing avalanche safety can save lives.
3 Start small
Nobody became a champion overnight. Start with short runs on easy terrain. This will help you build up your fitness and familiarise yourself with your equipment. When you feel ready, challenge yourself with longer and steeper runs. I strongly recommend that you start by riding on the piste before venturing out into off-piste terrain. This will help you become familiar with your equipment and the feel of your skis.
4 Get to know the terrain
A good skier is also a good map reader. Study maps of the area you're visiting and try to familiarise yourself with the terrain. It's not just practical, it's part of the adventure - anticipating what exciting slopes await you! There are a lot of smart apps now, such as fatmap, that can help you find good routes and see how to get to different places quickly and easily.
5 Have fun and respect nature
Remember why you're out there - to have fun and experience nature in a unique way. Take time to enjoy your surroundings, breathe deeply and feel the freedom. But don't forget to respect nature. Leave no trace and always be aware of your responsibility to the environment.
Off-piste skiing is a great way to discover new aspects of skiing and get closer to nature. With the right preparation and attitude, you'll have an unforgettable adventure. So what are you waiting for? Strap on your skis, it's time to hit the off-piste!
Remember, it's always a good idea to hire a guide to help you find the best and safest areas.
If you don't have your own equipment, most resorts have it available for hire. Places like St. Anton and Ischgl are very popular among ski holiday enthusiasts.
